Researching disability: Facilitating best practice in inclusive research

22nd February 2018, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

Disabled people have historically been habitually excluded from academic research. Yet, in recent times there has been a shift towards participatory research, and inclusion and participation of 'users'. However, new researchers to the field or students in the beginning of their research career might be hesitant to conduct research within this field. Researchers might be unsure how to approach individuals with disability, both as partners in research and as participants. There may also be anxieties about barriers to gaining ethical approval. This workshop aims to help participants to consider these issues, learn from others' experiences and develop research that is inclusive and empowers rather than focusing on the vulnerability of participants.

This workshop will support students and early career researchers to develop an approach to research that is participatory and inclusive. Although the importance of inclusion and participation is widely recognized within the field of disability, research more often than not continues to ‘study’ participants from afar.

In the beginning of the workshop members of an expert panel will discuss topics such as ethical approval, accessibility and the experience of being a reserach participant.

This will be followed by a group project where you will work on case studies, supported by panel members, to develop your own research project ideas. These will then be presented and prizes will be given to the best ideas. The workshop will be relaxed and fun, with space for discussion, networking, cake and coffee.

This workshop will develop your confidence and knowledge in conducting research that is empowering and inclusive.

Please share with us your areas of interest, research questions or case study ideas so we can make sure the workshop is as helpful for you as possible. Email ideas and suggestions to: pjacobs@exseed.ed.ac.uk. Please also email us with any dietary requirements or questions about accessibility.

You are warmly invited to attend our film screening of ‘Defiant lives’ later in the afternoon. An extraordinary film about the disability rights movement.
