Following on from our statement on the suspension of social work student placements on 26 March 2020, and the number of comments that members submitted via this website and through emails, we have now written to the SSSC asking that they pay full practice learning fees for the academic period of 2019-2020 for social work student placements.

We are writing on behalf of a large number of members of the Scottish Organisation for Practice Teaching in response to the decision to suspend social work student placements across Scotland as of 20th March 2020. Our membership is overwhelmingly in agreement with the decision taken and recognise the difficulties that taking this decision has had on students ongoing education; the impact on individuals whom had been receiving the students support; and also the impact on those working as supervisors and assessors for the students.
These are unprecedented times and we acknowledge that necessary changes are required due to the evolving nature of the coronavirus pandemic and the need of the social work sector to respond to these changes.
While recognising these challenging time we are asking that the SSSC consider the following request: that the SSSC pay full practice learning fees for the academic period of 2019-2020 for social work student placements. Many placements have been disrupted, therefore a significant number of placements have ended before the date they were due to end. Thus, payment should be calculated on the number of intended practice learning days and not actual days completed when this disruption is out with any parties’ control.

We will let you know their response.

I thank you all for taking a stand and demonstrating leadership at this time, it is needed and appreciated. The slightly different position of the Independent Practice Teacher is so often overlooked, and it means a lot to be considered, valued and represented.
